9 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Creating Promotional Videos for Your Brand

Promotional video is one of the best tools a brand has. It's also easy to get wrong, and most of the mistakes we see are avoidable. We shoot and edit video for a living, and the same nine problems come up again and again. Here's what they are and how to steer around them.

1. Neglecting a Clear Call to Action
If viewers don't know what to do next, they'll do nothing. Every promo video needs one clear ask. Visit the website. Book a call. Follow the page. Pick one, say it plainly, and make sure it fits what the video is actually about.
Where you put it matters too. A call to action that lands right after your strongest moment works a lot better than one bolted onto the end. And if it feels jarring against the tone of the piece, viewers check out. Test a couple of versions and keep the one that gets clicks.
2. Ignoring the Importance of Storytelling
Facts are forgettable. Stories stick. The promo videos that work give people a small narrative to follow: a problem, a change, a payoff that lines up with what the brand actually does.
A good story is also what gets a video shared. People pass along things that made them feel something, and that sharing is reach you can't buy. Decide what you want viewers to feel first (excited, relieved, curious), then build the shots, music, and pacing around that feeling.
3. Overlooking Audience Insights
A video made for everyone lands with no one. Before you shoot, get clear on who you're talking to: what they care about, where they watch, and what problems they're trying to solve. Even basic research, like a few customer conversations or a quick survey, beats guessing.
Different audiences want different things, and what works for one group can fall flat with another. Videos that speak to a real pain point and show how you solve it get watched. Videos that talk about how great you are get skipped.
4. Compromising on Video Quality
Shaky footage and muddy audio cost you credibility fast. Viewers assume the quality of your video reflects the quality of your business, fair or not. Decent gear, clean audio, and good lighting are the price of entry.
The edit matters as much as the shoot. Color, pacing, transitions, and stabilization are where raw clips turn into something polished. If that's not your wheelhouse, hire it out. It's the same reason listings get professional photos: small details change outcomes. Our real estate photography playbook gets into that side of things.
5. Failing to Optimize for Platforms
A video that kills on YouTube can flop on Instagram. Each platform has its own norms: short, punchy vertical clips in one place, longer and more informative pieces in another. Cut versions to fit where they'll live instead of posting one file everywhere.
Mind the technical side too. Aspect ratios, resolution, and file specs differ across platforms, and getting them wrong means cropped shots or fuzzy playback. A few extra exports cover you.
6. Neglecting the Power of Thumbnails
The thumbnail is the first thing people see, and often the reason they click or keep scrolling. Treat it like a tiny billboard: clear image, readable text, honest about what the video shows.
Pull a strong frame or shoot a dedicated still, keep any text short, and check it at phone size. If you can test two thumbnails against each other, do it. The differences in click-through are bigger than you'd think.
7. Overloading with Information
Trying to say everything means the viewer remembers nothing. Pick the two or three points that matter most and build the video around those. Save the rest for another piece.
Give each section of the video one job, and keep things moving. Captions and simple graphics can carry details without cluttering the script. Clarity keeps people watching. Clutter loses them.
8. Ignoring the Impact of SEO
If nobody can find the video, it doesn't matter how good it is. Titles, descriptions, and tags built from the words your customers actually search give it a real shot at showing up.
Spend a few minutes on keyword research before you post. Look at what your audience searches, name the title accordingly, and write a description a human would want to read. Small habit, real reach.
9. Underestimating the Need for a Distribution Strategy
A great video with no plan behind it just sits there. Decide up front where it goes, when it posts, and who pushes it: your channels, your email list, partners, paid placement if it earns it.
Each channel deserves its own treatment. A version for social, a cut for email, maybe a longer edit for the website. Tailor the ask for each spot instead of blasting one link.
Then check the numbers after launch. Watch time, clicks, and shares tell you what worked and what to change next round. That feedback loop is how your second video beats your first.
